Liepāja's new concert hall "Lielais Dzintars"
Musicians and employees of the Liepaja Symphony Orchestra, as well as the denizens of Liepāja who enjoy attending concerts and other events, are living in expectation of the new concert hall.

The city of Liepāja has been calling for the construction of a new, modern concert hall that would serve the entire Kurzeme region for a number of years. At the initiative of Imants Resnis, Artistic Director and Conductor of the Liepāja Symphony, the Liepāja Concert Hall Support Fund was created. In 2002, the Liepāja City Council announced a tender for the concert hall project.

The winning project, Urban Loop, was from an Austrian architectural firm Gienche & Company, which gave the name Lielais dzintars (The Great Amber) to the future concert hall. The construction job will get under way this fall, the project was designed by Volker Ginke.

At the moment the sketch project of the "Great Amber" is finished and the phase of preparation for the construction project (technical project phase) has been started.

The patroness of new concert hall is Vaira Vīķe-Freiberga, the former president of Latvia. She was introduced to the course of project and has stressed the necessity to pay maximum attention to the acoustics of the new hall.

Liepāja Symphony Orchestra is anticipating its first concert in the new hall in 2014, when Liepāja also hopes to become the European Capital of Culture.
