The National Culture Council had the tough task of weighing 26 nominees for the inaugural presentation of the Award of Distinction, but finally decided on three for the honor. All have earned international recognition this year, and have helped put Latvia's name on the map, so to speak.
A new, original Latvian opera – a first time venture for composer Artūrs Maskats, will have its world premiere December 5th in the Opera House, a valentine, if you will, to a legendary personality of the cultural scene – Valentīna Freimane. Alas, her story (circa 1939-1944) is Latvia's story, and moreover, Europe's story.
The Riga International Film Festival December 2-12 will screen a tremendous number of movies (over 120) in three cinemas – all downtown, "Splendid Palace", kino "Citadele", "K. Suns". This will be a tremendous opportunity in turn to view the latest in Latvian cinema, attend retrospectives, see the newest sensations in Europe, and a wide variety of Nordic movies , short and full-length, meant for children – but not only.
